“What people say about you are opinions, not facts.” This is something my mother has ingrained in me for years now. And so, I believe it to be true no matter the opinions stated, and by whom. We live in a country, where fortunately, we have freedom of speech: we are allowed to express our opinions and beliefs without fear of being punished in a court of law. This is a basic right that every single person in these United States have. The Head of State is not exempt from this right.
I felt compelled to write this article because as an immigrant from the country of Haiti, what was spoken by the Head of State almost a week ago concerns me. This is not to condone nor pardon what the Head of State said; however, I must say that, he too, is entitled to an opinion as an American citizen: that is his right.
The opinion might be offensive, it might be discriminatory in nature, it might be downright wrong and uncalled for, but it still remains an opinion, and simply that; not a verified fact. An opinion is “a view or judgement formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge” (Google definition). On the other hand, a fact is “a thing that is known or proved to be true” (Google.com). We can decide for ourselves whether or not the thing the Head of State said is a fact or an opinion. It is not worth our time and energy, however, trying to prove or disprove what the Head of State said, the truth needs no defense; a lie does. What happened last week is a very well known tactic (Hegelian Dialectic) of the enemy, making sure you are so wrapped in petty things that you become unaware of his more maleficent plans. The enemy lives for that, it’s like an amusement for him seeing you all caught up in negative emotions like anger, fear, frustration, sadness, despair, etc…all of which are currently in full effects.
At the end of the day, the statement “Shithole countries…” does not become a proven fact simply because someone in a high ranking position said it. Joe down the block could have said it and no one would say “boo”! But somehow the narrative flips because it was not Joe who said it but John who is the Head of State.
By now, we should all know that majority of the things (‘promises’) uttered by those in power are opinions to get your emotions where they want them to be. Sometimes, these opinions are hidden behind masks such as ‘Universal healthcare, lower taxes for the middle class, free higher education, jobs for everyone’, and so on and so forth. When these opinions (‘promises’) are prettied up like this, we don’t see them as harmful, albeit they are and seldom if ever come to fruition. This is because they were not facts to begin with, but simply opinions to get your mind at a preferred state.
Again, let me reiterate that this is not to overlook the opinion of the Head of State; this is simply to say: don’t become too caught up in someone else’s opinions; they are NOT facts.
The Bible says, “Also take no heed unto all that are spoken; Lest thou hear thy servant curse thee: For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others” (Ecclesiastes 7:21 KJV). Many people have been fired up since these injurious words (“Shithole countries”) were spoken by the Head of State.
Let me say that this is only fuel for the enemy’s fire. Keep your fuel for yourself, like the 10 wise virgins of the New Testament (Matthew 25:1-13). This way you will be able to keep your lamp burning for the dark roads ahead.
